A chance meeting

I arrived in the winter rain and found my seat,

And sitting there across the room was lovely you,

Your solft golden hair gathered around your shoulders,

One lovely foot out of a shoe.

You sat by the window in a winter dreaming,

And all others in their cold worlds would pass you by,

All others would walk past and disregard you there,

All others would, but no, not I.

I came for coffee and suddenly wanted you,

I sat safe from the rain and gladly lost my way,

And there lost in longing looks and lasting glances,

I would have given you the day.

I would have given all wealth innumerable,

To lock and hold this minute, this moment fleeting,

To be, to know, to speak, to touch, to hold, to have,

To extend this one chance meeting.

.
